Tasty Chicken Momo (Dumpling) Recipe

Chicken Momo (Dumpling) Recipe – Momo is one of the popular and favorite snacks in Nepal and India. There are different versions and names of it. It’s available in chicken, mutton, pork, and vegetables. The delicious pickle should also be made to dip in and enjoy with momo. Since childhood, I love momo and try to prepare it from different recipes. It’s better and more fun to make at home.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 lb Ground chicken (thigh if possible)
  • .25 lb Small cabbage grated
  • 1 Large onion finely chopped
  • 4 Scallions finely chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon ginger and garlic paste
  • 5 Coriander green leaves finely chopped
  • 1 Teaspoon chili powder(can increase/decrease as per taste)
  • 2 Teaspoon Cumin Seed Powder
  • 2 Teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 2 Tablespoon Melted Butter
  • 2 Teaspoon Momo Masala
  • 1 Momo wrap (45 Pieces)
  • Salt to taste

Mixed ground chicken with all ingredients
PROCEDURE
1. In a big bowl, place ground chicken with grated cabbage, onions, scallion, ginger & garlic paste, spices, momo masala, salt, chili powder, and melted butter.

2. Gently mix all the ingredients with 2-3 tablespoon water.

3. After its mixed well, you can leave it for 2 hours or more in the refrigerator. For best taste prepare at night, leave it in the refrigerator to make it for the next day.

4. Momo wrap can be bought from Nepali/Indian/Chinese grocery store or can make it from white flour dough. I used a wrapper to save some time and tastes good too.

5. Fill the steamer with water and put a paper towel in the steamer basket or cabbage leaves.

6. Take about 1-1.25 teaspoon of momo filling and place it in the center of the wrapper and fold them. To fold: bring the edges of wrap together and pinch them. Make pleat and twist them so that it’s sealed.

7. Steam for 10-12 minutes, shake the steamer basket and put momo in the plate.

8. Enjoy delicious juicy momo with your choice of pickle.

There are different versions of a pickle. For the pickle, boil 2-3 pieces tomato in water or cut in six pieces and fry it in little oil. Keep it in a bowl to cool the tomatoes. Place 2 peeled garlic, salt, 1 green chili, 3 tablespoon ground sesame powder, cilantro, 1/2 tablespoon sichuan powder in a mixer and grind it. Transfer pickle from the mixer to bowl and add lemon. If you like more spicy then you can add red chili powder to increase the spice level.

You can keep momo in the freezer so that you do not have to make it every time and can cook when you are hungry. If there is surplus cooked momo then you can also pan fry it and eat the next day. Momo can be deep-fried and served with pickle as well.

In less than $10 you can make around 45 pieces momo which will be enough for 3-4 people. So, the cost per each person will be around $2.5 to $3.5.

It seems difficult to make momo but apparently, it is not that hard. It might be hard to make at the beginning and will take some time to practice. But as you prepare more, you will master it and make it in a shorter duration.
